A Frock By Friday™
April 19, 2010
So I had an idea yesterday.
I get a lot of email from people who say that they wish they could sew clothing or they'd like to try. I tell them it's not as hard as you might think but I suspect my claims are unconvincing.
I'd like to help.
Would any of you be interested in making a dress with me?
I would post a detailed diagram of a couple steps of the dress every day. You would have the same pattern and 'make' the dress with me as the week went on. By Friday, we should have a finished dress. If a dress was too hard we could start with something simpler. We could use one of the 'free' patterns off of the BurdaStyle website. If a dress sounds like something you might be interested in, I thought this one below was a good start!
Get the free pattern instructions here and pattern here.
Pattern is courtesy of Elaine of The Selfish Seamstress.
Let me know if any of you might be interested. If a large enough amount of people would like to try this, I'll give it a go. And if you got stuck along the way you could leave me comments and I could try to answer them for you.

I love this idea!! I don't have any fabric on hand though...grrrr....
I love to sew, but hesitate to make something for myself due to bad past experiences. I would love to give this a try tho. That pattern is too darn cute!
totally interested! and that dress is really pretty :)
Dominique
Definitely interested! Love that pattern!
Yes, sooo interested!!
I love this pattern. I wanted to let you know you inspired me to try the refashioning idea. I have three daughters and it is hard to find modest formal wear. I have been making prom, formal and graduation dresses for them with purchased fabric, but I went to Goodwill and found tons of large size dressed!! Some were brand new. So I bought a couple and just am putting the final touches on a prom dress that is under $30 dollars(dress $7, sequins for bodice $20)Thank you for the idea. I also found a bed skirt for $3. that made the cutest skirt for my 9year old.
I'm taking sewing lessons right now!!! This sounds like a super fun idea. Just curious- what type of fabric is best for this? Just trying to get an idea for the cost of this project...
Yes! Would love to try too!
I've seen this dress before on another blog. I would love to make it. I am going to Paris in May and need a dress like this!
I would love to make this dress... but is there anyway you could teach us how to make sleeves for it?
very interested!
I'd like to join you.
Please, please, please! That dress is adorable. Love the detailing, want to so it, but need your e-help!
Inspired, but overwhelmed in Washington
I'm SO in!!
This is such a great idea! When are you planning to start it? I don't have fabric on hand, but really want to give it a go. So, yes, please offer fabric suggestions.
I love this idea! I would be very interested in doing it. What type of fabric is best? And do you think you could add some directions for a little cap sleeve maybe?
I think this idea is great and I love the first dress. I'm in !
I am totally doing this. Thanks and what a great idea.
I'd be up for this, especially with a dress! I need a bit of a push to get myself back into sewing, particularly clothing...
I LOVE this idea - a great way to jump in with two - or lots - of feet! thanks!
I just found your blog and I'm so excited to try this out. I'm going to run out and get fabric today!!!
I know I'm a little late to the paarty, but I'd still love to make this dress. I can't get the link to work to download the pattern though. Could someone e-mail me the PDF they downloaded. Thanks a bunch!
