Frock by Friday Fabric Suggestions
July 30, 2010
If you haven't bought your fabric just yet a couple of you have asked for some suggestions. I would recommend very lightweight fabrics. Cotton lawn, duponi silk, sari silk, Egyptian cotton, silky rayons, or a thin linen perhaps with a patterned bias tape trim. The above fabrics are from etsy sellers: theheydayshop and ZinniaSnipSnap.
Ohh, if you didn't mind wearing a slip you could use a non-traditional eyelet fabric might be cool, something with a large eyelet like this, or this, or this, or this.
The fabrics above are sari silks from etsy seller Glitzandpieces. They are only 20" wide but they are a couple yards long and that still might work for the Anda pattern.
Something with a large print might look nice, like this striped frock.
Above fabrics are from ebay sellers: vintagefabricaddict and catspajamasvintage.
I'd stay away from fabrics that are too lightweight like chiffons and lace and fabrics that too heavy like corduroy, wools and bottomweights.
Hope that helps. Also keep in mind you can add bias tape for the trims if you so choose.

oh I love sarees.........I am an Indian & heaps of them naturally:)
I had no idea that saree scraps too are sold on etsy!!!
Thank you so much. I'm going shopping this weekend and your suggestions are very helpful. BTW, I was shopping in a high-end boutique store yesterday and saw a dress very similar to the Anda dress, which was on sale for $38 (discounted from $76). I'm VERY excited to make my own!
anna maria horner has a beautiful line of voile fabrics that would probably work really nicely as well.
I have a bunch of questions on making design variations...
do you think this would look good with facing instead of a bias finish on the neck? could the neck become a scoop neck without too much work, or would that change the way the dress hangs too much? I can't tell...
Also--I liked some of the examples on burdastlye with stiffer fabrics- is there any reason you don't recommend using those? What about knits?
Bhoomika,
I think facing would work. I haven't made the dress yet so I can't say for sure but on first glance it looks like it would work. To make a facing piece just take your pattern and make another piece about 4 inches out from the neckline and do the same for the arm holes.
As for a scoop neck, you could try but it might look strange since it isn't fitted and there are no sleeves.
As for the fabrics, the only reason I didn't recommend a stiff fabric was because it's a looser frock and I didn't want it to come out too sacky. I didn't see any really thick material on Burdastyle.
Maybe I was too vague when I said cotton lawn but I would also recommend almost any kind of cotton: quilting, broadcloth, etc.
But I think you could still do it in a heavier fabric if you wanted. The worst that would happen is that it might be a little stiffer in the skirt.
Oh and knits,
Yes, knits would work too. They would probably have the opposite effect of heavier fabric and hang close to the body rather than opening out at the bottom. But still looks nice.
I have these two lawn prints in my shop that I think would work wonderfully.

and

they are medium weight cotton that would bell out at the bottom like the example.
I have other various cottons and linens that would also work.
send me an Etsy convo for more suggestions!
