Techique Tuesday: Invisible Zipper Tutorial

July 20, 2010

I like the way an invisible zipper looks. It's such an easy professional way to finish a garment.
The tutorial is over 13 minutes in total but I try to cover everything including using a zipper foot, an invisible zipper foot and a regular foot. See Part 1 & Part 2.

As I say in the video I recommend using an invisible zipper foot like this one. If you don't have one you can buy one here. You can sew an invisible zipper without one but it makes it SOOOO much easier and faster.

And if there's a technique that's always stumped you or intimidated you just leave me a comment and I'll try to get a tutorial up.

Button Holes. What is the best way to do the by hand?

I usually press my zipper first and it really does seem to help keep it unrolled. Much less fighting with it. Also, I use my small piping foot. Works the same way as the invisible zipper foot as it has grooves on the bottom.

I'm amazed you were able to do that one handed :)

Facings!!! They are the bane of my existance! I usually finish the edges with an overcast stitch on my machine or with bias tape because I don't have a serger. Still, a lot of the time I have a hard time with them flipping up. I understitch and tack them down, but maybe you have some other tips??? This is something I have been trying to perfect lately!

Thank you so much for posting this today! I have a skirt pattern all cut out and ready to go that calls for an invisible zipper and I had no idea how to begin. Your timing is impeccable.

Nice! Video tutorials are always fun =)
I have a tweak I've developed to invisible zipper insertion, check it out here: http://www.adventuresindressmaking.com/2010/04/no-tears-no-tearing-out-invisible.html

Fantastic! I love your Tuesday tutes. You astound me with your one-handed invisible zipper insertion! I can barely do it with two. :)

What a timing! I just started my first sipper involved project. I might have to watch this a couple of times, but am already feeling more confident. Thank you!

Thanks for this- I've always avoided putting in an invisible zipper but this makes it seem almost easier than putting in a regular one. I've heard once you learn how to put in an invisible zipper, you never go back to regular zippers.

I have just recently started using invisible zippers. I have always been a bit afraid of using them. On a recent fabric and haberdashery shopping trip I picked a couple of invisible zippers up by mistake. I got carried away but cheap zippers in one shop and didn't really check what I was buying. Since I now had lots of them I had to use them and get over my "fear". I love them now and think they add a much nicer finish to my dresses. Thank you for the tutorial. I never even checked if I had an invisible zipper foot. It'll be even easier from now on.
Thanks a lot.

How is it that you're in my head? Blind hems last week, invisible zippers this week, it's like you KNOW I've been putting off making those capris that I really need!

Thanks so much for the tutorials - I have an old-ish machine with not a lot of fanciness, and I appreciate that you also give a "back door" for those of us without all the special feet. :)

Thank you so much for posting this. I have been trying to figure the invisible zipper out for a few weeks can't wait to use the tutorial!! You're the best!

thx! I have yet to watch the video but even the link to the invisible zipper foot was helpful! I have one of those but never knew what it was for :)

This is so helpful and perfect timing! I'm working on my very first dress and it does require an invisible zipper. I'm so happy I purchased the invisible zipper foot!

Thank you soooo much! I actually needed to use a blind zipper today for a bridesmaid dress! I was a bit stressed, but your tutorial helped me visualizing the whole thing!

I cannot figure out how to do button holes on my machine. It has a stitch setting, but the fabric gets caught and a big knotty mess ensues.

That was a very helpful tutorial. Now, I'm off to practice what I just learned. I know how to put in a regular zipper, but I have always avoided the invisible zipper because I didn't know how to do it.
Thanks again!

This tutorial was great! Thanks so much for doing it, it really opened my eyes! I am going to order an invisible zipper foot right now!

I haven't even attempted button holes but I would love to learn how to do button holes! :)

Thank you so very much for this tutorial! I have had it opened on my computer for days and finally got around to watching it! It was just what I needed!! I have several patterns for my girls that need zippers in them and I usually just find something else to make so I don't have to deal with the zipper as I was never once taught how to put one in..until now! Thank you so very, very much!!

I put a zipper in last night using this technique and it was perfect! I've pulled out some other stuff from my closet to redo the zips now.

Thanks so much for the tutorial! Now that I know what that foot is for it's easy.

Ha, I'm now double posting a week later because I've been pulling out old zippers I put in and re-doing them. It's definitely making me happier with some of my older dresses.

Thanks again, you've been a great help!

OK, so I just left you a comment on the buttonhole tutorial asking for a zipper one and I see you have already done a zipper tutorial! (I'm trying to play catch up with all the blogs I read.) I will have to check it out later...you know, when I'm not at work. I'm on break, people! :)

LadyJadePerendhil said... Best Blogger Tips

that i so simple i'm tempted to try this. I somehow puzzled my way through my first zipper attachment. But i can definitely say I'm ready to tackle it again. Good bye drawstring skirts' hello zipper closures.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've never attempted an invisible zipper just yet, but this makes it seem much less intimidating. :) And I second the buttonhole tutorial suggestion. hehe

It's insane how long I've gone without buying a zipper foot! I'm almost embarrassed. I've been sewing crappy zippers!!
Thanks soooooo much for this tutorial, I can't wait to give it a try on my next project!

Hi I am new to your blog and love it! Can you do a tutorial on ...changing a pattern without a zipper, to a pattern WITH a zipper? How would U change it? Do you just add seam allowance? Many times, I find myself with patterns I like, but wanting insert a zipper(i.e. drawstring skirt pattern but want to change it to a skirt w/ zipper insertion).. ..Is it only me who doesn't know how to do that? Anyway lov your blog!

Very interesting tutorial. I was always afraid to sew with invisible zipper but you ease my discomfort.
