1. Take your band piece. It is the shorter of the two rectangle pieces you cut. Sew them together at the ends, right sides together.
2. Fold the piece so that the top and the bottom meet in the center. I did this with my bias tape maker. But if you don't have one just do it by hand. I recommend using your finger nails to make a long crease on either side and then try to iron.
3. Sew the end to prevent fraying.
4. On the RIGHT side of the FRONT of your dress, pin the piece you just made about 9" down from the neck line, 10" down for larger sizes. Pin the strip the entire way across the bodice and back until you get around to the front again.
NOW, I did not want a tie in my dress. Instead I'm doing a simple elastic on the inside of my dress. So what I'm doing instead is this:
5. On the WRONG side of the BACK of my dress I'm pinning the strip and continuing to wrap it around the front until it reaches around the back again.
6. Now, whether you're doing it on the inside or outside topstitch the band to the dress on each long side of the band. NOT IN THE MIDDLE. You want the middle to be open so that you can thread your elastic or ties through.
7. At this point I tried on my dress and to my surprise it would not fit over my head! I think the problem might have occurred when I sewed in my bias tape. I did mine a little differently than the Burdastyle instructions. In case any of you also have this problem here's what you can do....Cut a 3" slit in the back of your dress. Try it on to see if this opening is big enough.
8. Fold the opening to the wrong side of your dress and sew.
9. Take some left over bias tape and make a loop and sew it to one side. Then sew a button into the other side. You could also just use a metal hook and eye if you have one.
I made a fabric covered button to my match my dress. Ironically, I really like the way this mistake looks.
DONE FOR TODAY. TOMORROW....DRESS!!

Ok, did I miss a step? It looks like you already sewed your front and back pieces together? I'm kind of confused.
TheMoncurs,
Step 6 of Wednesday. Just sew the front to the back at the shoulder and side seams.
Ha, just saw that. I can read, promise.
I had the same problem with it fitting over my head. I even backed off and used an 1/2" seam instead of a 5/8" seam.
Okay, I am having issues! Not sure if I'm doing this right at all..
I put the dress over my head (surprisingly it went through), and noticed that the head/neck hole.. well.. its strange.. it doesn't lay flat across the skin.. rather, it looks like a big polka dotted fish with white lips just ate my body. I don't know if the problem is the bias tape (I made my own out of satin ribbon), or what. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!
Alejandra,
I'm a little confused about how it looks. I think you mean it goes up and down.
Also, bias tape is different than ribbon in that it is cut on the bias of fabric (diagonally) so that it is more flexible. That might also be to blame.
How did you attach the satin? Is it folded over the raw edge like double folded bias tape?
