Frock by Friday: FRIDAY!! The Weekend Frock

October 8, 2010

This dress was so much more easier than I thought, even with the alterations. It didn't turn out quite like the Modcloth version but I like it anyway.
The Modcloth version has a very different skirt piece. This one is more of a circle cut while theirs is more of a gathered rectangle cut. Plus, my material was a little thicker than I would have liked. I chose it because I thought the pattern looked similar to the Modcloth version but you can see that their version has an almost silky tissue thin material.
But I like it and I'm glad we could do it together. But I gotta tell ya, I'm pooped. This week has been rough for me. I'm really looking forward to this weekend. I'll be.....sewing. But at least I get to take the evening off. I think I'll try to coax Brian into a movie night. I kinda want to see "Let Me In". That or "Social Network".
And I think I'll wear this dress for our weekend date too.

Read more for Friday's last few steps.

Link to this Frock by Friday with this button!

1. Take your front and back facing and sew them, right sides together at the side seams.
2. Pin the top of the facing to the seam where your lace and bodice connect.
matching side seams.
3. When you get to the back, pin the facing right sides together and sew together. Then sew your facing to your bodice/lace.
4. Clip the curves.
5. Turn facing right side out.
6. Press the seams tight.
7. Topstitch around the seams and you're done!

jennifer,
Look in the tulle as well if you can't find it in the lace. And I used the 'tan' liquid RIT dye. And yes, I also got the fabric there.

As for the middle piece I bought that at another fabric store and I doubt you'd find elastic lace there but I do tell you how to use regular lace with wide elastic attached to the back.

And yes, there is no zipper in the dress if you do the elastic waist. So don't buy a zipper if you plan on doing this.

If you can't find the lace at JoAnn's just let me know.

I really like this one. I know you totally hacked the original pattern and now it will take more time, but now I want to make it!

It really is an easy weekend dress.

It turned out really beautiful! Where did you find a good source for silk or charmeuse? I looked for material I liked but couldn't find anything I liked where I normally buy fabric. I do have a wedding coming up in November and I think I could easily modify this for a maternity dress to wear to the wedding.

Very pretty! And the photos are fantastic.

Lisa...I have bought silk charmeuse online at denverfabrics.com; they often have sales, and their regular prices are pretty good too.

The dress is GORGEOUS! Beautifully photographed too.

Thank you for all the photo compliments. Since Brian doesn't get home until after dark now I have been taking them myself with a lowly tripod.

But in the past, if they were of me, he would usually take them. They usually look better sans tripod.
