For years I've been trying to solve the stuffed animal dilemma in our home. We have enough to populate a small plush city. I can't bring myself to give them away because the girls love them so much and they all have some kind of special meaning to them. Yesterday I spent the entire day cleaning up the basement because it had partially flooded with really disgusting water. The water ruined so many things I had in plastic bags on the floor. One of which was a sack of stuffed animals I couldn't find a place for upstairs.
So I've been thinking of making something like this for our overabundance of stuffed animals. It would also solve my need for bean bags. You can buy one for $450.00 but that's just madness! I think it would be comfy if it were stuffed with only plush animals and not dolls or mechanical plush toys. But we have so many of both I think it would still work. I wonder how the kids would feel about sitting on their stuffed animals.
A short cut idea might be to purchase a cheap bean bag, take out all the stuffing, cut a large hole in the cover, sew a see through mesh in it's place and fill it with your stuffed animals. That way you don't have to install a zipper.

The singles are MUCH cheaper: http://www.amazon.com/Boon-Animal-Stuffed-Storage-Tangerine/dp/B004OR1DY2/ref=sr_1_15?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1314287014&sr=1-15
@Drew
Thanks Drew! That's awesome! I wonder why the other one is so expensive?
That's a really good idea
The Tuckerbag
We have a similar problem at our house. Our solution was to take the shoe storage and sweater storage hanger boxes and hang them on a horizontal pole in a bedroom. Each animal has a roommate, and the kids can see each one.
To solve your other problem you could make them waterproof, then you could store them without worrying about water damage.
We have this problem. My daughter Anne-Louise loves her "stuffdies" as she calls them. We recently moved so I had to part with a lot of them. I really applaud you for recognizing the importance of them to your kids. The majority were from my daughter's hospital stay. There ain't no shame in stuffdies!
These are great! I instantly thought of a similar beanbag redo to yours when I saw them. I was thinking of somehow putting a smaller bag in a larger one so some of the" beans" would be between the stuffed animals and the person, for comfort and better shape. It would be super cute to do a few individual ones in different colors, scattered around a playroom.
When my sister and I were young, my mom hung a net hammock in one corner of the room (attatched at three points to really spread it out), and all of our stuffed toy animals lived there. It was really cute and functional, all of our favorite plush toys were within our view, and cleaning them up was a matter of some tossing. It was definitely one of her smarter moves.
We have a single one that was much less expensive. Its cute but dd takes all the stuffies out of it all the time so it really isn't all that helpful.
Wish I had one of these when the beanie baby craze was going on!
This is stinkin' genius!! I had no idea such thing existed :) I just ordered a single from Amazon to corral the madness. I was also thinking of sewing a bean bag chair so this may work for both....we shall see! Thx for sharing!
brilliant idea, we definitely have enough stuffed toys to fill many of those
Just a heads up - These are much less expensive through the Boon website: $99.99 http://www.booninc.com/products/TrioAnimalBag/841
That may make it more cost effective to purchase than make.
You can buy unstuffed bean bag chairs at Wal-Mart; they sell the beans separately. I wouldn't even bother making a mesh panel, LOL.
Thinking about the "un-stuffed" bean bag with mesh, there would still be a problem: once the girls see all their plush toys through the mesh, how can they not feel like hugging a few or at least looking through the lot in a rush of nostalgia...? So... that means adding a zipper anyway!;-)
Good luck!
I made one for my son, I made it like a short squat cylinder shape. For the top circle, I put the mesh window. Instead of a zipper, I just did velcro on the side (where the seam was on the long rectangle that made the side of the cylinder shape). It was pretty easy and it works great!
