Just had a rad idea! What if you could make collar inserts? Sort of like dickies but without the faux shirt portion. I've found that a lot of the dresses that appeal to me to have Peter Pan collars. Wouldn't it be great if I could just pop one in when I felt in the mood? It might not perfectly come together in the back but would still look cute. Possibly attach with clips on one side?
Her version would work with crew neck shirts. Something with a tight neck.

This was a big thing in the 30's and 40's, they did this by way of buttons on the inside of the sweater or dress and button holes on the collar so you could just button on new ones. This would also save on laundry as you wouldn't have to wash the sweater as often if you could change out the part most likely to get dirty.
Way back when...I had a white piqué collar attached to double fold binding and had to be hand basted on a collarless top.
My boss from camp would do something like this for uniforms which required a "light blue collar" she would go to thrift stores and buy any shirts with light blue collars and cut off the collar and then attach it into normal shirts!
You could also make it attach very easily by making a facing and then sewing on tiny snaps to the inside of shirts and on the facing
I love faux collars, I make them and wear them all the time :) they're very fun. You can check them out at www.mollymadewithlove.etsy.com if you like? x
