DIY Chic Summer Sand Surfer Cover Up

April 19, 2012

Hello! Wouldn't this make a great beach cover up? Would be a cinch to make. But you'd have to find very thin terry cloth. Like the kind used for baby towels. Here's some in a variety of colors on Amazon for only $7 a yard! You could also use stretch knit fabric which is what I think is being used in these photos but it wouldn't make for very good absorbancy. Update! Want to make one of these yourself? Try La Vie En Rose's tutorial!

I'd love to try and make this on my own.. I am still in the very beginning stages of sewing- if anyone makes this would they mind sharing the process? Maybe it's a no-brainer but any help would be appreciated! This wrap is too cute.

I think the fabric you are talking about is called French Terry. It has 4 way stretch, smooth on one side and then terry on the other. Here is a link for some at 4.25 a yard. http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/p/5542/Orange-Red-French-Terry

They have TONS of colors. I think I may try making one for myself. Super cute!!

How many yards do you think you would need if it is 60" wide?

Shawna said... Best Blogger Tips

This cover up is from Victoria's Secret...hence there being no instructions...

@The Crayon LabJudging from the photo I'd say stretch your arms as wide as you can and measure that. The amount of fabric will change the amount of drape in the back.

Love this! Could you use a jersey instead of thin terry cloth?

Grosgrain said... Best Blogger Tips

@AllieAbsolutely. In fact I think the picture is made in knit. I only suggested terry cloth because it makes for better absorption. But it certainly doesn't have to be that.

@Olivia
I would use a bed sheet draped from one arm pit's middle than around your back and let it drop on your butt to the middle of your other arm pit. once you have the length hold with each hand, since you will be holding it up anyway and then flip it out straight to get a length measurement. Once you have have this the rest is easy, add the arm pits just as "loops" to the edge top corners, I don't think you need to cut it to curved but this will be the trickest part, getting the loop holes attached and fitting correctly. I am so making this! Good Luck

Just an idea; couldn't one use a beach towel for this and just cut a circle out of the top corners? I think that would really be the easiest way - think upcycle!

L.S. Brownlee said... Best Blogger Tips

I think a slinky material that falls in nice folds like a jersey would be best.

Unknown said... Best Blogger Tips

@MatchYourself

Yes. Its a victoria secret thing. Its not made from terri cloth, but some other fast drying stretchy fabric. Super light and thin. I don't sew either. But I saw this and I'm like, "well its simple enough" lol.
They have a longer version now too.
