Mad Men Sunken Living Space: Comeback?

May 14, 2012

Who else is in love with the Draper's sunken living room in their New York apartment? Why don't builders make living rooms like this anymore? Would be great for small apartments. Really separates the living space without walls and makes the above living feel more spacious (no waist level furniture) as well as the below (higher ceilings). But there's just no way I'd pull off that white carpet. No....way....

Here's some real life ones. Yes, please, I'll take one in tweed;) I think I like the way the Drapers don't have a surround sofa built into theirs. Leaves thing more open and accessible.

i don't think we could do that... not very wheelchair friendly!

how tall can you make the sunken part without requiring a railing?

I like how they look too. But... My friend has one and just got smacked with a lawsuit from someone who fell into one & broke their wrist years ago. Yikes! I'm not sure they are worth their coolness :/

@TrishWow. What kind of friend sues someone for falling in their house. I mean, I know it happens, it's just really crappy. Shouldn't homeowners insurance cover that?

Don Draper's apartment is my dream home. But I agree, not wheelchair or child friendly!!!! Still to watch the latest Mad Men episode!

I actually have a sunken living room (1975 house, thankyouverymuch) and this post has inspired me to try to make more out of it!

Of course, I will probably feel a lot more love for it when I can replace the white quasi-shag carpeting that was here when we moved in...
