Disney Inspired Princess Ribbon Sculpture Day 2: Merida {BRAVE}

July 31, 2012

Welcome to DAY TWO of the Disney Inspired Ribbon Sculpture Patterns. During each day of the week (except weekends) I'll be posting the pattern of a Disney Inspired Princess Ribbon. Fun, huh?! Today we're starting out with Merida from Brave. Get all the tutorials for all the Disney Princesses as I post them in the link below:

I love Merida. Her bright orange curly hair is so wild fun to create. Plus, she's the newest princess and all the girls love her. Let's start!

Materials:
Hot glue
no-fray spray (or hair spray)
pencil

Start out with these lengths of ribbon:
flesh colored: 3", 2¼ ", 1½ "
green or aqua: Five pieces of ", 1½ ", Five pieces of 3"
brown: 1", 1½ ", five pieces of "
black: 3"
orange: three pieces of ribbon wrapped around two pencils each equal 7" of twisted ribbon
white string: 2"

Step 1: Roll 3" piece of flesh colored ribbon into a circle and glue. This will be your head.

Step 2. Cut 2¼ " piece at each end so that the tips are rounded. Spray with no fray spray. These will be your arms.

Step 3: Make the curls. Simply hot glue or tape one end of ribbon to a pencil or any other kind of long stick and wrap around then hot glue or tape other end to stick. Wrapped portion should be 7" long. I repeated on two other 7" on another pencil. Then put them in the toaster oven for about 5 minutes on 200 degrees. When done, take out of toaster oven and unwrap. The ribbon should be sufficiently curly. PS you can do it in any oven, it doesn't have to be a toaster.

Step 4: Take two of your four pieces of ". Glue then to the arms like so.

Step 5: Glue the arms to the body's back.

Step 6: Glue two more pieces of " to the arms. You should leave a space between the other green ribbon pieces so that the flesh is showing. Merida has a dress with detached medieval sleeves.

Step 7: Take your 1½ " of green and cut off a piece lengthwise.

Step 8: Glue the wider piece that you just cut to your flesh colored piece that is also 1½ " long.

Step 9: Roll it in a circle and glue end down.

Step 10: Glue one of your long 3" pieces to the front of your body.

Step 11: Glue the ball you made in step 9 to the front of your body over the 3" piece you just glued.

Step 12: Glue the rest of your 3" green pieces to the BACK of your body in a fanned out pattern.

Step 13: Take your 1" piece of brown ribbon and glue around waist just below arms. Have ribbon ends glued to back.

Step 14: Take your brown 1½ " piece and cut the bottom at an angled point.

Step 15: Glue the piece underneath the brown waist band you glued in step 13.

Step 16: Glue the four pieces of " to the bottom of your green ribbon. Spray with no fray spray.

Step 17: Now the fun part. Take one of your 7" pieces of orange curled ribbon and cut in half. Glue to top of head.

Step 18: Repeat for other pieces of orange curled ribbon. You don't have to cut 7" pieces in half. You can make varying lengths and glue to top of head. Intertwine around crown of head.

Step 19: Crossbow optional. Take your piece of 3" black ribbon and fold the ends over and glue down.

Step 20: Cut off the ends to make a point.

Step 21: Cut center out of bow.

Step 22: Glue piece of string to bow ends.

Step 23: Glue bow to Merida's hand.

Step 24: Glue on headband and you're DONE!

I tried the heat gun to set the ribbon in curls, yes it works! I wasn't clear on the instructions for how long the curled ribbon should be, so for anyone who has my thinking skills, it's 7" of ribbon AFTER it's curled. Found that out the hard way with the Rapunzel one! I kind of wish the instructions gave an approximate length of the ribbon before you curl it. Also, just FYI, the heat gun works nicely to seal the cut edges of your ribbon too.

@Caryn SSorry about that Caryn. I didn't give the length before curling because I figured if you were using a thicker or thinner stick it would effect the outcome length. But yes you're right, it's 7" AFTER it's curled. I'll add the 'after' in my next tut.

Thanks for enjoying the series!

Some help needed here: I'm doing the ribbon cutting and just took the measurements from the list at top. But going through the instructions it looks like you need % pieces of 3" green ribbon? And what do you do with the 2 1/4" inch length of the same color? I'm worried I'm missing a step somewhere!

@Caryn SCaryn, You're right. I must have not erased a measurement in my original notes. It should be five pieces of 3" and disregard the 2 1/4. I think I know why I did that but it's a long boring explanation.

Sorry about that.
