Frock by Friday™ Preface
April 25, 2010
Tomorrow is the day! I'm so giddy. I hope I've given all of you enough time to get your material together.
Some things to mention before I post my first few steps tomorrow.
I am going to sew this dress without all the bonus steps (ie, trimming the seam allowances, finishing inside edges). I decided to do this because when I first started sewing all those extra steps made sewing seem really tedious and difficult. I think a beginner should first learn how to do the basic steps and once they feel comfortable with those, then add the extra steps which make a dress more durable and neat.
If you feel comfortable adding these steps on your own, of course, feel free to do so.
Tomorrow we'll be cutting out the pattern. That's it. Believe it or not I think this is the most difficult part of the process. If you've already cut your fabric then great! You can skip to Tuesday. But I hope you haven't because I have a few tips that will make it easier and faster for you to finish, especially since we are using a pattern that you must print out and tape together.
I added an additional sash piece, if you're interested. And a lot of you have requested that I add a sleeve. Although I haven't cut one out yet I will try and provide the pattern for that tomorrow as well.
Any questions just ask them in the comments and I will try to answer them in the comments.

Oh, I so wish this dress were in my size! *sigh* I looked at the sizing again, and I'm far outside the range of this current pattern. But I'll be following your steps and trying to learn something, and hope to have a finished garment of another type by Friday on my own.
I'm looking forward to your tips! I think I've decided to sew a muslin this week and see how it fits... then make the needed adjustments to the final dress. Wish me luck!
Can't wait to see everyone's finished dresses!
This is a great idea. Thanks for hosting this sew-along!
Such a clever idea-I hope you have a bunch of people join in!

I so want to do this! My printers on the fritz so not sure I'll get to. I'll be watching either way!
Wahoo! I'm so excited to get started!
I'm so excited! Finding nice fabric is hard round here, but when I do find some I will definitely make this! Thank you for doing this. :)
Not participating but I can't wait to watch everyone's progress :)
Will we be adding a 5/8 inch seam allowance? I noticed the pattern does not have one. I have mine printed and taped together. First time I have ever downloaded a pattern and pieced it. Not too hard. I will probably do it again. Very excited to start the project.
Hi, even though I am not participating in your "Frock By Friday" party, I do have a sewing question for you. I am quite new to sewing; I just bought a sewing machine just over a year ago, and on Friday I completed my first-ever skirt with great success. My girlfriend who quilts came by to check it out and told me that it was done very neatly with nothing to critique! Yay for me.
Anyway, here's my question: when sewing through multiple pieces of fabrics (such as skirt panel + ruffle embellishment + ruffle trim), my work shifts and bunches a bit. How do I combat the accummulated bunching? I want my trim to lay flat atop of my ruffle, but it's just not perfectly flat.
Hopefully this question makes sense. I appreciate any input you can offer. Thank you so much for your time, Victoria
Oops, sorry I read your Monday post first and didn't see this mention about sleeves.
Thanks for doing this! I'm excited!
This looks like so much fun!! I'm out of luck this time around (It's not maternity) but I will be watching and saved the pattern to use a few months down the road!
I"m so stoked! I totally thought you had done this all last week and was so confused I couldn't find the posts! Funny coincidence, I just so happened to go to the fabric store and buy fabric for a dress today- the dress we're making! Yay! I'm more retarded then I thought I was, but YAY I get to be part of the team!! lol
I am also SUPEr stoked about the sleeve thing. I was going go try and figure that out myself.
I am a bit bummed about my fabric... I really wanted a solid colored dress but I couldn't find any fabric of a nicer quality... this dress isn't going to be very soft! Hmmph! I really wish I had been able to find some poplin, because that's what I had really been dreaming about. :/

Oh yay! Just found this series. I guess I'm already a day behind, but I'll try to catch up!
I would love to catch up. Where did you get this beautiful pin stripe fabric you are using? What type of fabric are you using?
Thanks,
Kate

hi i was wondering whats the amount of fabric you used or how much fabric do you recommend for a size 42?
I have only just found you!
But I will endeavour to catch up.
Could I make this dress with a full skirt out of fine needle cord? I have a favourite light weigth denim dress with polka dots that has a fitted bodice and a full circle skirt and I want to replicate it.
