Embellish Knit Month: Day 14

November 17, 2010

Orange navy and white are divine.

A friend of mine recently asked how to fix sweaters that were too short. I suggested adding a peplum (ie that ruffled thing attached to the bottom of the sweater).
This sweater was originally way too large. BUT, it only had buttons and an opening to the middle of the sweater. See before.

So I cut off the sweater below where the buttons ended and used the extra material to make a peplum. I also added a braided navy and white trim to the edges and made loops along the button line.
1. Cut off extra material of sweater to end of button opening.
2. Cut off 3" from the bottom with the hemmed edge. Cut into two equal pieces.
3. Gather the 3" material of both pieces.
4. Make the ends curved.
5. Attach to bottom of sweater. Note: I resized the sides and sleeves.
6. I also made the sleeves shorter. To do this I cut them at the elbow.
7. Then cut off the hemmed edges of the end of the sleeve and reattach to new sleeve edge. Note: be sure to do this step before you resize the width of the sleeves so that you have enough hemmed cuff to reattach to the new sleeve edge at your elbow.
8. Then place embellishment as you would like them on the sweater and sew in place. Done.

Oh I love orange and navy! My old college roommate always thought I was crazy to combine the two.

This knit-re-do is brilliant. I have loved them all, but I would never of thought of this.

Love this one! Is that navy dress from express? I love it :) I couldn't pay the $80 for it at the end of the summer...it was part of the inspiration for that chocolate dress I made!
