I saw this Anthropologie sweater and thought it would be fairly easy to replicate. It is a chunky knit sweater. I don't know what the term would be for this type of knit but it's definitely not cable or ribbed.
I simply took some complimentary fabric and sewed it to the front. See before. And see full tutorial below.
1. First I cut off the ribbing at the bottom.
2. And sewed it to the middle.
3. I then took a 5" wide fabric and hemmed the sides.
4. I also added mustard yellow trim to the sides.
5. I sewed it just under the ribbing, then folded it under the sweater to the wrong side.
6. I did the same thing above the ribbing. Then I pinned the fabric close the collar and topstitched.
7. Then sewed on buttons three inches apart.

I love this refashion. I'd atually spotted an Anthro cardi as well last week (not sure if it's the same one as you cause your link only goes to the main page), and thought it would be a good inspiration for a cardi refashion...

Way to save $178!
I have a bunch of sweaters I would like to repurpose, but I always get hung up on exactly how to sew them. Do you use a stretch stitch? Zigzag? Is there any tips you can give for how to sew chunky knits like that? I can't find any information about it. Are they serged? If so, are there alternatives for those of us without sergers? I am seriously jealous of that sweater, by the way.

I really love this one. Definitely my favourite so far. I was wondering if you sewed the fabric on first - as in, making two long panels, then sewed the knit strip on top, would that work just the same?

I sewed the knit strip on first because I had originally intended to do something else with it but if I had to do it again I would sew the fabric on first and then the knit strip.
I just love this idea! Brilliant! Hmmm.. I am gonna have to dig into my closet and find something that I can maybe turn into something fab like this. Maybe! hehehe.. thanks for sharing! I love it!

I looove this sweater. You are so awesome for posting these tutorials! I never knew you could do so much with old sweaters, i'm mad at myself for donating our old ones last year. Question - Did you finish the sweater at the bottom after you cut off the ribbing? I always though knit would unravel if you cut it? maybe this is a dumb question, but I would really love to know. I have really benefited from your vast knowledge of sewing!

Yes, I did. I just folded it under like any old hem and sewed. If you're worried about having it unravel when you wash it you could fold it over twice just make sure it doesn't look to short after you're done.

I've loved your embellish knit series, and finally got around to playing around with some Goodwill sweaters last night. I tried this design (minus the front fabric addition) to a thinner sweater, and while I love the overall look, the thinner sweater seemed to stretch when I finished it with the bias tape. Down the middle is a little stretched out (doesn't lay smoothly) as is the hem. The hem might be able to fixed by making it wider (?) but I'm not sure what I did wrong. Ideas? Suggestions?
