Is it that time of the year already?! Yes. I had to do a Christmas themed sweater! How could I not?! Peppermint is always the way to go. They are great colors to pair side by side and really seldom look appropriate but during this time of year.
I added a LOT of tiny knob buttons down the front of this sweater. AND made holes for each which was a little tedious but paid off in the end.
I loved the way the red and white twine looked like peppermints when rolled into circles. So I added a few to the neckline and then asymmetrically added them down the front next to the buttons.
I had this perfect red and white striped undershirt which I paired under the sweater to sort of frame the white as I didn't want it to look too washed out. The only thing better would have been a sheer red and white striped blouse with a bow necktie. If I could have found a sheer red and white striped material I would have added faux sleeves and bow tie but alas, I could not find any at JoAnn's. But if you were going to try and recreate this look that's what I would do. Maybe you could find some online somewhere.
I also made a cute folded embellishment for the neckline and finished the raw edges with a blanket stitch. I think I might wear it for our Christmas get together later this month!
As for the 'before'. I forgot to take a picture of it before I cut it up the middle. But you get the picture. I looked like this, just not a cardigan.
1. Sew buttons down the front.
2. Sew button holes to match with the buttons. I used my hand buttonhole foot. See a tutorial on how to make buttonholes with a buttonhole foot here.
3. Then I made the rolled twine embellishments. To do this I cut a piece of circular felt and hot glued the twine in a sprial.
4. Then I sewed the spiral to the sweater and sewed the twin to the sweater and around the neck to the other side of the collar.
5. I went down to the bottom and added another spiral the same way I did the first.
I then added four more spirals the same way as I did the first two to the neckline of the sweater.
6. I then took a piece of red wool a little more than an inch wide and used a.....
7. ....blanket stitch to finish the raw edge. If your machine has a setting like #39 on my machine (see left picture) then you too can do a blanket stitch.
8. I then pleated it and sewed it down the middle.
9. Then sewed it to the neckline.
DONE!

SO beautiful for the holidays. I agree the buttons and button holes were well worth it although it must have been SOOO much work. I like this one because it's festive yet not in the least bit tacky.

super duper fun! love the spirals. i do have a question though...i'm a newbie follower, so forgive me if it's been asked a million times before: i notice you use hot glue on your sweaters...can you wash them? that's a lot of pressure not to get them dirty after all the hard work!
Really clever...to take it up and make this sweater everlasting Christmas, I'd use 100 percent wool felt (it won't shrink in the wash).
Now that's FUN
