Embellish Knit Month: Embellishment Haberdashery

December 8, 2010

So guys, I'm so sorry today I dropped the ball and don't have a new sweater to show you today. BUT I've decided to do something else instead. I know a lot of you don't have the same resources in terms of proximity to cool fabric and trim stores. And I don't want that to deter you from thinking that you can make a great embellished sweater.

JoAnn's is okay but honestly, I buy about 90% of my trims and buttons from an amazing fabric outlet just a couple blocks from my home. The owner goes to manufacturer's auctions and buys in bulk whatever they are getting rid of. The amount of unique and interesting trims is beyond anyone's expectations. See above pic. That's only 1/2 of 1 wall. There's about two more giant walls filled with literally thousands of buttons and trims. And most of these things are only 20-70 cents a yard.

Okay, now that I've made you all green with envy, I'll add that there are some amazing places on the internet that you can find just as amazing trims as long as you have the patience to wait a week (sometimes less) for it to come in the mail.

Here are some etsy sellers who offer some amazing trims (Note: I am in no way affiliated with any of these sellers)

If any of you have some great suggestions please include them in the linky party below!

Thank you so much for that information. I have been wanting to try some of your sweaters, but I don't have a place near me with great trims.

Although LA has the garment district and there is tons of fabric and trim stores, I don't live very close to them. I usually have to resort to Joann's. Will definitely check these websites! Thanks for sharing them.:)

Your photos are lovely! Thanks for the post!

I would love the name of the fabric outlet! I'm down in York, but get up to the capital area on occasion, and a fabric run would definitely call for an occasion :) Thanks Kathleen!

Every time I go to Joann's, I think, "why are you allowed to have the sewing monopoly and such crummy stuff?" Seriously, the trims are the worst. Do you hear me Joann's?

I have a question! Where is this amazing notions/fabric outlet? Visiting your site has made me so excited to be done with finals when I'll have time to play and sew. :) I have friends in Harrisburg that I'm visiting over the holidays and would love me some trimmings. Thanks!

My favorite is the festive feathers. Knowing me I would attempt to make a necklace out of it.

I second Ann, what is the name of the store? It looks like it may be worth a trip, as I don't think I'm too far away.

Everyone who is curious about the store I frequent,
It's called the PA Fabric Outlet. There are two locations. The one I frequent is in Lemoyne. The other location is in Lancaster. I've never been to it but I've been told by a friend that lives in Lancaster tat the Lemoyne one is better.

Here is the Lemoyne address and phone:
415 Bosler Avenue
Lemoyne, PA 17043-1966
(717) 761-3259

Here is the Lancaster address and phone:
2460 New Holland Pike
Lancaster, PA 17601
(717) 656-0917

Maybe we'll see each other there! You know what I look like:) And I'm there like EVERYDAY!

Hope that helps!

Yea! I'm not too far from Lancaster and I'm visiting my sis in New Cumberland around Christmas. I know where I'm taking a side trip to.

Ah, ha! I'm within an easy trip, too. We used to have a PA Fabric Depot here in Baltimore, but it closed. I loved to browse there. Thanks for the info.
