I've always wanted to try and make something like this for our hot hot deck.
To replicate without a pergola you might need some ingenuity. But I bet all the materials you would need you could find at Lowes or Home Depot. Maybe you could use some kind of curtain track sliders for the hanging hooks?
Looks totally like something Ana White would have on her site. I should send out a request.

I love retractable awnings & that looks like a really neat idea. We totally need those here in NJ right now.

I have actually done this with my deck. I used stretch wire, the kind you use for net curtains and eyelets to run it through. It is definitely something I now couldn't live without in the summer sun.
You could use the sliding track from a closet door top and the screw in thingies that come with it. It would require your hanging bars to be wood or a material that accepts something screwed into it. Kinda like concept at the faux barn doors @ http://theletteredcottage.net/diy-sliding-door/ Just flipped with a series of doors sitting long ways.
Very nice design for retractable awning… sorry but just a bit confused. As per the understanding, you are the one who makes this? Well, very creative of yours. Hope there is ready-made of this from store or professional to help me here in Australia. Am thinking right now is from Weinor store, I believed they also made this kind of awning.
