So! Today is my first introduction to Project Sewn. We had to choose our favorite fashion icon to create an outfit based on. I chose Ulyana Sergeenko, a Russian stylist, photographer, blogger, occasional fashion model and designer. She tends to dress in very long, nostalgic pieces that somehow still look modern. The look is very dramatic and always beautiful.
If you like this look please go vote for me over at Project Sewn but even if you don't like it please go check out Project Sewn for all the other amazing fashion icon outfits my fellow competitors have created this week and vote for your favorite! Scroll down to the bottom of the page to vote.
I named this the Steam Train Frock because the look reminded me of something a bit Steampunky with the fur but also because I thought it looked like something someone might have worn while waiting on a train platform in the snow at the turn of the century.
It's a three tiered wool/fur circle skirt. Of course, I couldn't use real fur, so my skirt is just faux but I think the warm feel is still very present. I made the waist very fitted and dropped. I've seen this look in a lot of wedding dresses lately and it's very figure flattering when paired with a mid section belt. The fitted portion of the skirt is made from a heavy wool. I also bought boning thinking that the weight of the skirt would pull the wool down but in the end it held its own without any boning assistance!
The pattern I made is actually very simple! It's just SOO huge and overwhelming that it was quite a challenge to piece it all together. Plus, even though the fabric was faux I had to buy about 5 yards so even with a coupon it was kind of pricey. BUT, I think it was worth it because the end look was very dramatic and showy!
And how much did I luck out with the weather, eh?! Perfect compliment to fur! Now, if only I had a Russian opera to attend:-(

This is just perfect and I love your snow pics! You've seen Doctor Zhivago, right? I just love snow movies and snow pics. Nicely done and I'm looking forward to the pattern. Fun!
Beautiful!!!
I absolutely ♥ this.
I literally gasped when I saw this dress on the Project Sewn sight - brava!! Truly a knockout
*site....I promise I can spell!!
This is fantastic. FANTASTIC.
oh, that snowy look-- SO romantic & pretty! and ulyanna is a heartthrob.
FABulous. Absolutely fabulous! I couldn't help giving you my vote.
You look like a beautiful winter princess! I love your style inspiration and how you used it to make such a beautiful and unique dress! Your photography is equally stunning and I can't wait to see what you make for the rest of the competition. So gorgeous! Well done :)
It's your own project runway!!! You look stunning. Love the look. Love the little touches. What is the lipstick color. Perfect. As usual!
Absolutely beautiful!!!!!
This looks amazing. I love how your inspiration is modern, and the photographs to go with the outfit are stunning. Well done! Bravo!
You look like a Russian princess. Amazing sewing!
AWESOME! I actually pinned this when I saw it on Pinterest. Breathtaking photos!
absolutely divine!
I love the skirt better than the fur skirt worn by Ulyana Sergeenko. I picture it in a rich color in velvet.
I don't know when I'd even need to wear a faux fur maxi skirt but damn it I want to make one now! It's so beautiful and dramatic! You knocked it out of the park lady!
I am so sad that I missed the voting because you were getting my vote, hands down. This IMMEDIATELY went on my to-sew list, I've been brainstorming projects that would fill in a gap in my wardrobe: dress clothes for dinners/theatre/opera outings that would actually keep my warm in the middle of the winter.
Plus the execution of your project is just stunning.
These pictures are dreamy and so is this outfit!
@Alida MakesHah! I know right? It will probably sit at the bottom of my sewing pile forever. Outdoor New Year's Eve party perhaps?
Thanks for the props:-)
